North Platte was a small town in the middle of Nebraska on the Union Pacific Railroad.  During World War II, this railroad line was a major route for moving soldiers across the country for training and to the east and west coasts for training and debarkation.  A town of only 12,000 people, North Platte welcomed and fed six million soldiers during the war.  Union Pacific Depot canteen was open 24 hours a day for four years.  This story honors our veterans and the wonderful people of North Platte.

German immigrants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century settled in the fertile Mill Creek Valley.  They wore wooden shoes in their gardens and present a fascinating story of hard work and musical Saturday Nights.  Wooden Shoe Hollow, a historical novel by Charlotte Pieper, describes their lives.  Learn more about these little known settlers and their story.

The College Club of Cincinnati will celebrate its 125th anniversary this year.  It is appropriate to reflect on the club’s accomplishments in education and philanthropy in the past as we anticipate the expansion of these efforts in the  future.  Gathering information from an historical summary written by Carole Rauf and the talents of Carol Parsons, a skit depicting major events and achievements of The College Club will be presented for the membership at this initial meeting in the new year.       Carol Parsons                                 Chairman of the Day

 Cindy Lawyer is a retired history elementary teacher from Zanesville, Ohio, who will spark your interest about an historical event she stumbled upon while reading the picture book, Train to Somewhere by Eve Bunting.  Enjoy a Power Point presentation with historical pictures, while learning about the mass migration of over 200,000 children who were moved from major cities to new families in the West. The Lost Tea Rooms of Downtown Cincinnati…it was such a different world then!  There was a sense of occasion when going to town. Using firsthand experience stories and gathered information, Cynthia will take you back in time to the days of enjoying an afternoon downtown and having lunch in a popular tea room. Our Country has one major, national memorial solely dedicated to honoring and preserving the legacy of women who have defended our freedom. Col. Pearson will weave the history of this Memorial with a brief "tour" of the facility and its special relationship with the Honor Guards of the Tomb of the unknown Soldier.
